# Can I run my business software on my own servers?

Felesh can run on your own servers. Here is what that does and does not tell you, and what Felesh holds once it is running.

## The short answer

Can you run your business software on your own servers? With Felesh, yes: on the Enterprise plan, Felesh can run on your own servers.

This post helps you decide whether where the software runs matters to you.

## Why do people ask to host it themselves?

Because the customer list is the business. The names, the notes, the promises you have made and the dates you made them for: if those went missing, you would feel it by the end of the week.

So when you are about to put that material into a piece of software, a fair question comes up. Whose machine is it sitting on?

For some owners the question is about control. They want to know who looks after the machine and who can switch it off. For others it is a matter of habit, or of what a customer has asked of them. Either way, you are asking where the business lives, and it is reasonable to want a straight answer.

## What does "your own servers" mean?

It means the software runs on machines that you, or people you choose, look after. That is the plain meaning, and it is all the claim covers.

It is worth being careful here, because the phrase invites you to read more into it. Running on your own servers tells you where the software runs. It does not, by itself, tell you what the software knows, what it does with that knowledge, or who decides. Those are separate questions, and they deserve their own answers.

## What does Felesh know once it is running?

Less than you might expect, and the list is short.

Felesh knows what is done on Felesh. It knows the files you import. Contacts and companies can be brought in from one Excel or CSV file, through an import you review: you see the column mapping and the rows before anything is saved. And it knows what you upload or teach it, meaning the documents you give it and the instructions you write.

It does not read your mail. It does not read your drives. It does not connect to other tools.

So the boundary of what it holds is the boundary of what you have done in it and put into it. If you want to know what Felesh could possibly know about your business, you can work it out from that list.

## Does where it runs change what Felesh does?

No. Where Felesh runs says nothing about what it does. After a call you type one sentence and Felesh drafts a note, the promise with its date if you gave one, and the next step; each draft shows its reason and waits for your yes. A task is added directly. Customer messages arrive in one inbox, Felesh answers from what you taught it, and what it cannot answer goes to "Needs you" with the reason.

The judgement calls stay yours wherever the software is hosted.

## What should you ask before you choose?

A few questions are worth putting to yourself, whatever software you are weighing up.

- **Who would look after the machine?** Running on your own servers means someone in or around your business carries that job. Be honest about who, and about whether they would still be there in a year.
- **What would you actually put in it?** If the list is contacts, companies, notes and the documents you teach it, ask whether that list matches what worries you.
- **Is the worry about location or about control?** The two overlap, but they are not the same. You may find that what you want is to know exactly what the software can see, and that the list above answers a good part of it.
- **What has a customer asked you?** If someone you work with has asked where their details are kept, write down their exact question before you choose.

None of these has a universal answer. They are the questions that keep the decision yours rather than the software's.

## Where to start

Start with the list. Write down what you would want the software to know, then compare it with what Felesh holds: what is done on it, the files you import, and what you upload or teach it. If the two match, the question of where it runs becomes a smaller one. To see how it works day to day, you can talk to Felesh in plain words about your work and watch it answer from your own records.
